About this blog
Doctoral Student/Candidate Forum
SSWR is excited to present a blog just for doctoral students who are members of SSWR! In this forum, doctoral students are encouraged to network with each other on research interests, conference presentations, publishing, as well as discuss any common concerns or questions that arise, such as resources for completing the dissertation, issues specifically for international students, or job market questions.

Hello Doctoral students,
I have an MSW from Smith and I am considering a PhD.
Do you have any tips for me?
What should I look for in doctoral programs?
What have been the best and worst aspects of your doctoral journeys?
Thanks,
Anne

I would suggest the following tips when looking at doctoral programs”
1. What is the mission/focus of the school? Some programs focus more on research than clinical practice or teaching.
2. Is there a professor in the department whose research interest matches yours or is their similarities?
3. Learn about the internal and external funding opportunities.
4. What is the department’s graduation rate and history?
5. Consider the number of junior and senior faculty members.
6. How diverse is the program?
7. Talk with students, staff, and faculty.
8. Consider where you want to leave for the next 3 to 5 years.
9. Learn about research supports within the department and university that can help you along the way to earning your degree.
10. Talk with the reference librarian to learn about resources made available to you for research and scholarship.
11. Look for a supportive environment.
12. Develop a strong and positive support system.
Lastly, I have learned the value of a strong support system. My worst aspect of the program is personal and not directly related to the program. Life goes on while you and in the program. It is not easy to be prepared for the unexpected. However, having a good support system (internal and external to the program) is important. I hope this helps. Good luck!
